- This dataset represents the road network for the northern Oriente of Ecuador, circa 2002. Only portions of the network are current to 2002, while others are current to either 2000 or 1990. The road network was originally digitized from 1:50,000-scale topographic maps from 1990, and appended together. The more current portions have been updated using a combination of GPS data from the field and satellite imagery. The geographic locations of all road segments are current to 2002, while only a portion of the attributes are current.

- This dataset is intended for use in network and other spatial analyses. A secondary purpose is for representing the road network on maps.

- Road segments digitized by Michelle Lown, Bonnie Kaserman, and Brandie Sullivan of the CPC Spatial Analysis Unit. Field GPS updates were collected by Joe Messina (Dept. of Geography, Michigan State University), Philip McDaniel (CPC Spatial Analysis Unit), and Francis Baquero. Topo map appending, satellite updates, and attribution updates were done by Brian Frizzelle, of the CPC Spatial Analysis Unit.

- Attribution for those arcs current to 1990 is based on the attribution from the topographic maps. The attributes for those arcs current to 2000 are based on field observations, and were set to the same categories as those on the maps. The 1990 map categories and 2000 categories were retrofitted to the more accurate 2002 categories. The 2002 categories in use are based on field observations and more accurately describe the range of surface types in the Oriente. The speed ranges applied to these roads are based on field observations. The average speed is simply the average of the minimum and maximum speeds.
